Akunami Shrine Festival Dedication Dance
Fujieda-shuku
Akunami Shrine is said to have been built in 318 AD (6th year of Emperor Nintoku's reign), making it the oldest shrine on the Shida Plain, and it is a prestigious shrine mentioned in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (list of important shrines), which was compiled in the Heian period (794 - 1185). It is called "Akunami-san" by the locals, and is a popular place to pray not only for good luck and warding off evil, but also better soccer skills. The Fujieda Grand Festival is held once every three years, with folk dancing accompanied by nagauta, shamisen, and hayashikata music, and floats being pulled around. This festival is said to be rooted in a festival held in Fujieda-juku post town during the Edo period (1603 - 1868), and the current format of the festival became the standard in the Meiji era (1868 - 1912). The folk dance performed at this festival has been designated as an intangible folk cultural property of the city, titled the "Akunami Shrine Grand Festival Dedication Dance". ("Akunami Shrine Grand Festival Dedication Dance" is a constituent cultural property of Japan Heritage.)
