Where is Sunshu?

Sunshu Journey is the story of two major
passes and eight post stations between Shizuoka City and Fujieda City.

Shizuoka Prefecture stretches very far from east to west.
22 out of the 53 stations of the Tokaido Road are located in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is no exaggeration to say that 40% of the stories of the 53 stations started here in Shizuoka.
And in the middle of the Tokaido Road is Sunshu, the area west of Numazu and east of the Oi River. As depicted in The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series of ukiyo-e by Utagawa Hiroshige, it is said to be the most beautiful area to see Mount Fuji.
Travel from Kambara along the coast through Yui and on to Shimizu. From there pass through the city of Sumpu (now Shizuoka City) and over the pass to Okabe and Fujieda. Sunshu has such rich stories because there are both the sea and the mountains. Not only Yaji and Kita, but many others traveling to Ise enjoyed traveling through Sunshu.
Now is the perfect time to revisit the road and feel the depth of Shizuoka.

A magnificent horizon, Suruga Bay, and mountains that change colors with the seasons.
Enjoy the food, the cities, and the downtown areas.
See Mount Fuji in the back of all the scenery.
Here in Sunshu, you can see the highlights of Japan all in one place.

During the Edo period, Mount Fuji was revered as the origin of all life.
Through many trials and tribulations on the road to Ise, Sunshu was the place where one could truly enjoy both Mount Fuji and the sea. Between them there stands the city of Fuchu established by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Fujieda, which bustled with many travelers as a junction between the sea road and the mountain road.
This is probably the place where travelers in the Edo Period first enjoyed a journey across Japan.
