Historic Site: Tanaka Castle Daimyo's Residence

Fujieda-shuku

Tanaka Castle played an important role guarding the western flank of Sumpu Castle, and it is said that Tokugawa Ieyasu frequently stayed at this castle while traveling to engage in falconry. It is a very rare type of castle in Japan, with four concentric circles of defenses centered on the main enclosure. The original main enclosure was replaced by the modern day Nishimashizu Elementary School, but buildings related to the Tanaka Domain, including the main enclosure turret, have been relocated and restored on the grounds of the late Edo period garden, and you can still take a stroll through the beautiful garden. It is one of the constituent cultural properties of Japan Heritage.
