This road is said to have been built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590 in order for his army to pass on its way to attack Odawara. In the Edo period (1603 - 1868), it became part of the Tokaido, a main road traversed by the processions of many daimyo (feudal lords) and other travelers. Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e depicts travelers crossing the mountain pass and tea house selling the famous todango. In 2010 it was designated a national historic site, as the precious remains of the old road. It is one of the constituent cultural properties of Japan Heritage.
