A retro townscape, certified as a historic national highway

Kambara-shuku was the 15th post station on the Tokaido Road, and its town layout has remained unchanged since it was moved to its current location in 1701 to avoid high waves. The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido: Evening Snow at Kambara, an ukiyo-e masterpiece by Utagawa Hiroshige, leaves us with a mysteriously snowy landscape in this land of mild climate. It is the only area in Shizuoka Prefecture certified as a "historic national highway", and the right-angled bend in the narrow road, the namako wall patterns, and characteristic folk houses are all strong reminders of the Edo period (1603 - 1868).

In the comic novel Tokaidochu Hizakurige (Going Tokaido Shank's Mare), Yaji and Kita have traveled a long way from Edo when they arrive at Kambara-shuku.
At the honjin (an inn for traveling feudal lords), the procession of a feudal lord has arrived and is in the middle of a meal. Kita sneaks into the honjin, eats his fill in the company of the procession, and takes some food with him wrapped in a cloth.
Yaji, who was waiting outside, is overjoyed to see him.
Yaji has his fill of the food, but when he realizes that it is a cloth Kita blew his nose in to, he pretends to spit out the food.
